Be My Valentine: Sweet Ways to Spoil Your Fur Baby

Writer: Jennifer SomersJennifer Somers

Valentine’s Day is synonymous with love, and as every good dog parent knows, there’s no one we love more than our fur babies!

Whether you’re planning a cosy night in or want to celebrate in style, I’ve rounded up six fun and thoughtful ways to make Valentine’s Day extra special for you and your pup.

Valentine’s Presents

I’m going to let you in on a little secret… My husband and I stopped buying each other Valentine’s gifts about a year into our relationship. 🙈 But if you’ve been reading my blogs for a while, you’ll know I never miss an opportunity to spoil my girls!

From themed bandanas to seasonal treats, the pet accessory industry is booming right now, and there are no end of options for spoiling your fur baby, whatever the occasion!

One of Vivienne and Trixie’s favourite treat brands, Pooch and Mutt’s Love-ly Lamb Probiotic Meaty Treats are a great option for food-loving pets. Or if you want to go the extra mile, why not whip up a homemade treat, like my dog-friendly cake?

Doggy Date Night

Sure, a romantic dinner with your partner is nice, but nothing beats a date night with your fur baby in tow!

The UK is currently brimming with dog-friendly restaurants, many of which can be found on online directories such as DogFriendly or the soon-to-be-launched Coffee Dog Company Community App. For my Scottish readers, The Boar’s Head Fife comes highly recommended by my lovely Instagram friend, @most_want_ted

If, like Vivienne, your pup isn’t a fan of busy places, a cosy night in can be just as fun! In fact, our Valentine’s plans involve a takeaway curry for us, special treats for the girls, and a movie marathon on the sofa - perfection!

Pamper your Pooch

Regular grooming is essential for your fur baby’s overall health and wellbeing - especially if they have a particularly long or curly coat. But let’s be honest… Some dogs love it, and others (Vivienne, I’m looking at you 👀) would rather avoid it!

If your pup enjoys being pampered, Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse for a little extra TLC.

While a professional groom is undoubtedly a lovely treat, you can also create a spa-like experience at home with a warm bath, a gentle brush, and even a paw massage!

The best part? They’ll look extra adorable for their Valentine’s photoshoot!

Go on a Valentine’s Adventure

Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday this year, why not plan a belated weekend adventure with your fur baby?

Whether it’s a long walk in your favourite park or an exciting road trip to explore somewhere new, dogs thrive on fresh smells, sights, and sounds. Plus, an extra-long walk means even more quality time together - and what better way to show them you love them?

Puppy Playdate

Does your dog have more friends than you? I feel you! 🙈

Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to arrange a fun meet-up with their doggy pals. A playdate at the park (or even in a secure garden) allows them to socialise, play, and burn off some energy - all while you enjoy a coffee and a cheeky Valentine’s treat of your own!

Keep Them Safe

As with every day, the best way to show your fur baby you love them this Valentine’s day is to keep them happy, healthy, and safe.

Chocolate and wine, for example, are staple Valentine’s gifts, but they’re also incredibly toxic for our furry friends. Make sure to keep these, along with other harmful foods and flowers (like lilies), well out of reach.

The Perfect Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to return just a small amount of the unconditional love our fur babies show us every single day. Whether it’s through special treats, extra cuddles, or a fun adventure, your pup will appreciate whatever you have planned.

Just remember to consider your dog's personality, comfort level, and dietary needs when planning your celebrations. Oh, and don’t forget to show your partner a little bit of love too! 😉
